TOM RIDGE: The right for governor Tom Ridge is what America is all about. A working class kid from Erie, Pa., every step up the ladder was a challenge. But he never quit. At school he studied hard and won a , four-year scholarship to Harvard. In the Vietnam War, he served as a non-com “grunt" and came home with the Bronze Star for Valor and Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry. Back in school under the GI Bill. Tom earned a law degree at Dickinson College and served as Erie Assistant District Attorney. Then, in 1982. Republican Ridge stunned political pundits by winning the Congressional seat in northwestern Pennsylvania despite an overwhelming Democratic registration. And, boy, did he earn the respect of farmers and rural leaders. Ridge fought our wetlands battles, won immediate disaster aid for communities hard hit by the 1991 drought, authored a federal law that makes bank loans more available to distressed rural communities, helped assure fair milk prices, and more, much more. Now the six-term Congressman has accepted the call to serve as governor. We know Ridge has the brains, training, experience and courage to do the job. He’s already proved that. But first that “working class kid from Erie” must win the Republican primary May 10. And that’s up to you.
