A34-Lancwter Farming, Saturday. April 23, 1994 KUTZTOWN (Berks Co.) A twilight growers’ meeting will be held here at the John Brubaker farm on May 4 at 6 p.m. Topics covered will include cover crops, relay cropping, com posting, and no-tUI soybeans with out herbicide. Since 1991, Brubaker has parti cipated in a unique project with the Rodale Institute Research Center (RIRC) known as the Whole Farm Management Study. Through this study Brubaker and RIRC staff haye looked at the ef fect that implementing low-input practices has on the whole farm, and at how well new practices work on a real farm. Brubaker implements low-input farming practices on a portion of his farm, allowing researchers to monitor the effectiveness of those practices on a farm scale. Researchers also look at Bru baker’s beef feedlot to get a pic ture of how the livestock opera tion affects crop production. The growers’ meeting will focus on se veral practices used on this study Public Auction Register Closing Date Monday 5:00 P.M. of each week’s publication APRIL SAT. Relay cropping is a soybean GOLDEN VALLEY. Minn. Under ideal conditions, the ear liest com will emerge from the ground is five to six days after planting, said Jim Graeber, North rup King Co., Illinois agronomist However, Graeber noted that com is seldom planted under opti mal conditions, so growers need to adjust planting depth accordingly. Adequate moisture and temper ature levels are vital to seed ger mination and plant emergence, Graeber said. Because heat is usu ally the limiting factor early in the season, shallow planting is best Even then, it might take as long the Bon-Ox Road and go to Kilpatrick Rd. or from PA Route 116 at Bonneauville, Pa - turn N. on Bon-Ox Road or from Gettysburg, Pa. - take US Rt. 30 East to Kilpatrick Rd., Jason Hoff man, owner. Later in the season, when soil temperatures reach SS to 60 degrees Fahrenheit soil moisture becomes a limiting factor. In that case. Graeber said, the seed should be planted somewhat deeper. In germination, the seed initial ly develops radical and lateral seminal roots. This temporary root system absorbs water to help the seedling emerge. At emergence, Office Equip., & Safe. No-till soybeans without herbi cide have been used successfully on the Brubaker farm in the past. A demonstration of this system will occur. The meeting will occur rain or shine, and should last approxi- the nodal roots begin to form. After the plant reaches the three leaf stage, the permanent nodal roots take over in the uptake of water and nutrients. When planting, key factors are uniform spacing, proper depth, and getting the kernels covered G N M mately one and a half hours. Field demonstrations may be changed depending on weather conditions. The Brubaker farm is located just east of the Rodale Institute Research Center on Siegfriedale Road. There is no charge for this event For more information, contact Paul Sowden, (610) 683-1474. These are the seedbed conditions most ideal for helping the seed take up moisture and promoting fast growth. On set-aside ground, where the potential is greater for insect dam age, Graeber recomends delaying planting until after the ground is warmer.
