Set For Poultry Center
UNIVERSITY PARK (Centre
Co.) The Penn State Depart
ment of Poultry Science will hold
dedication ceremonies for its new
Poultry Education and Research
Center (PERC) on Thursday, May
19 at the main university campus
in State College.
The PERC includes six separate
buildings (central research with
incubators and environmental
chambers, meat bird, pullet, layer/
egg processing/market turkey,
breeder, and meat processing)
consisting of approximately
50,000 square feet of floor space,
constructed at a cost of more than
$6 million. The facilities have
been designed with both funda
mental and applied research in
mind, as both commercial equip
ment and small pens for battery
and floor studies are available.
Dedication day will start at 8:15
a.m. with a symposium in Room
101 of the Agricultural Sciences
and Industries Building. The prog

Science and will conclude with.a
keynote address by Dr. Bill
Stadelman, an emeritus professor
of food science and animal (poul
try) science at Purdue University.
Stadelman earned his master’s
ih poultry husbandry and docto
rate in agricultural biochemistry
from Penn State in the 19405.
After arriving at Purdue, he deve
loped an outstanding research and
teaching program using both meat
birds and eggs that has truly
gained him an international
reputation.
Governor Robert Casey, Penn
State President Joab Thomas, and
Dean Lamartine Hood are sche
duled to participate in the formal
dedication ceremonies at the
PERC at 11 a.m. After the dedica
tion, lunch will be provided, fol
lowed by guided tours of the
facilities.
