the lantern signal. The British advanced by land, but Paul
Revere’s journey started “by sea.” Around 10:30 p.m. on
April 18,1775, friends rowed him across the Charles River, in
the very shadow of the British ships. Revere then safely rode
to Lexington where he was joined by Dr. Samuel Prescott
and William Dawes. Halfway to Concord, Revere was cap
tured and nearly met his end Luckily, the British abandoned
him when shots rang out from Concord. Revere walked back
