USDA Re search Pasture Lab, Penn State University, has been selected by the Certified Alfalfa Seed Council as the Research Award winner for its 1994 Alfalfa Awards Program. The selection was announced by Council President Dean Urmston, W-L Research, Inc., at the 24tb National Alfalfa Symposium held recently in Springfield, 111. The objectives of the Alfalfa Awards Program are: • Recognize excellence among producers in the production and utilization of alfalfa. • Recognize excellence in alfal fa promotion, research, and devel opment and education. • Recognize individuals who have made special contributions to the alfalfa industry. • Promote and publicize alfalfa for its many merits in animal agri culture and as a profit crop. Alfalfa In dustry Award for individuals em ployed in various aspects of pri vate industry, end Alfalfa Research Award for workers in all areas of alfalfa research. Leath is the research plant pathologist and lead scientist on the nonchemical control of forage pests at the U.S. Regional Pasture Laboratory, University Park. Through his 26 years of dedicated service to the improvement of al falfa, he is acknowledged as not only an authority on alfalfa dis eases, but as an adviser and men tor for many alfalfa pathologists around the world. He has written more than 100 research papers and numerous book chapters dealing with vari ous aspects of alfalfa diseases and forage production. Leath also is a tremendous con tributor to the alfalfa industry through his participation in com pany seminars, symposia, training programs, and field days. Leath contributes to the alfalfa industry in other ways. He main tains a collection of more than 1,500 fungal cultures, which he makes available to the seed indus try for use in alfalfa selection pro grams. He also provides advice to alfalfa breeders on disease screen ing and has characterized more than 1,000 alfalfa lines for then resistance to foliar diseases. Mallinson, veterinary medicine, at University of Mary land, and T. Milton Nelson, dis tance education, are co-authors of a new brochure titled “Good Neighbors a Health Program for Small and Specialty Poultry Hocks.” The brochure was published by the Mid-Atlantic Cooperative Extension (MACE) Poultry Health and Management Unit MACE is an amalgamation of avian health and information pro fessionals associated with land grant universities in seven states, state departments of agriculture in four states, and ES-USDA. “Good Neighbors” is intended for wide distribution to owners of small and specialty flocks, includ ing game birds, waterfowl, turk eys, ratites, and purebreds. Feed stores will be a primary distribu tion point for the 10,000 brochures. The publication’s aim is to edu cate its readers on the importance of biosecurity in order to prevent the introduction and spread of ser ious diseases that could jeopardize the commercial poultry industry.
