Eckel said he firmly believes
that the American farmer pro
duces the best of all foods in the
world and he has tremendous faith
in the future of marketing these
foods.
He said the opening of world
trade will have a tremendous
impact on the exportation of food.
“Our main concerns will be
with the elitists ,” Eckel said. “The
animal rights groups, the food
safety advocates, they all want a

“Farmers today are being
shackled by regulations and po
tential regulations. Rut. responsi
bility should not cripple our pro
ductivity.
“Today,” said Eckel, “the
American fanner should be proud
of the fact that they feed all of the
250,000,000 people in the coun
try. export 35 percent of their pro
duct, and do it on less farm land
than was ever before available.
That is an envious statement for
any industry.
“Today consumers are spend
ing less than 12 percent of their in
come for food which is a drop of
25 percent in the last 10 yean.
‘Talk about health care!” Eckel
said, waving his hands. “Proper
nutrition is the number one step in
any health care program. Some
one is missing that point And,
while health care costs have in
creased 40 percent food has de
clined.
‘The success of the American
fanner has allowed us to pay for
the higher quality health cate we
have in this country.”
Eckel also urged Bedford
County members to support the
Pennsylvania Farm Bureau and to
get more members.
On the same note. Rod McKen
rick. Region 3 Organization direc
tor suggested volunteers going
door to door to obtain members.
Slate Director Howard Shaulis
said there ate presently 23.000
members in the commonwealth.
