Ninety Degrees North
Eighty-five years ago on April 6, 1909, Robert E. Peary and
his small band of Arctic explorers finally became the first
men to reach the North Pole. Or did they? For over eighty
years controversy has surrounded Peary's claim Upon
returning from the Pole, Peary learned that Dr Frederick
Cook (who served as physician on one of Peary's Greenland
expeditions) claimed to have reached the Pole in April 1908.
Although Cook's claim was finally discounted by most au
thorities, critics continued to question whether Peary actually
reached the Pole some felt he may have missed it by as
much as 60 miles In December 1989, after exhaustive investi
gation. the Navigation Foundation concluded that “Peary,
