ELLIOTTSBURG (Perry Co.)
Even though we often believe
we are ovcr-rcgulated in America,
we still live in a land of tremend
ous opportunity, where hard work
and responsibility pay off.
This was the message delivered
to the Perry County Holstein Club
annual meeting by Dieter Kreig,
editor of a fanning weekly news
paper, and native of the former
Communist country of East Ger
many.
A crowd of over 80 Holstein en
thusiasts attended the Perry Coun
ty Club’s annual meeting which
was held recendy at the Messiah
Lutheran Church in Elliottsburg.
Saying that he could recall
childhood memories of the police
arresting his dad in their living
room for refusing to turn over the
farm to the East German state,
Kreig went on to tell of his fami
ly’s escape to the West, their jour
ney to America, and the settling
on a farm in York County in the
early 19605. Kreig said he remem
bered the brainwashing he receiv
ed each day at school in East Ger
many, and how his parents would
correct that teaching each eve
ning.
He said that the greatest dam
age done by the communist states
was the removal of private proper
ly rights.
“When a man cannot own prop
erty and jmprove his lot by hard
work and motivation, a part of his
spirit dies,” said Kreig.
Since the collapse of the Berlin
Wall, Kreig has returned for visits
to his homeland each year. He
commented on the neglected state
of the farm buildings of his home
farm when he first saw them in
1990, after leaving the farm as a
child under the cover of darkness
almost 30 years earlier. Kreig
said, “Buildings everywhere are
falling down and without needed
coats of paint. The people are so
poor, they can not afford to fix the
buildings up. The only buildings
that are receiving needed repair

are the churches.”
Kreig said he finds this fact
ironic, since the renovated church
es are a clear sign that the com
munists failed in one of their pri
mary goals to obliterate a faith
in God among the people. Kreig
concluded his speech with a chal
lenge to appreciate the opportuni
ty that America affords, and to
watch carefully that our country
does not slide towards the social
ism and communism that so ruin
ed his native land.
