Solanco Holds FFA QUARRYVILLE (Lancaster Co.) Solanco School District hosted two FFA County Contests recently: the dairy foods contest and the agriculture mechanics contest. Students from seven county school districts participated in the contests, including Solanco, Lan caster Mennonite, Ephrata, Penn Manor, Garden Spot, Manheim Central, and Pequea Valley. Gus Birchler, Penn Manor agri culture teacher, was the chairman for the dairy foods contest, which was held at the Memorial United Methodist Church in Quarryville. The students were required to take a general knowledge written examination, followed by several “hands-on” evaluation stations which tested their knowledge of dairy foods. The various stations included milk flavor evaluation, California mastitis test, milker units test, identification of cheeses, and teal vs. artificial dairy products. Eighteen students participated in the contest from five different school districts., The contest included a written qxam. The hands-on requirements of the con test were broken down into two areas: problem solving and skills. Under problem solving werfe soil and water tests, a small engine test, and building construction.' Under the skills category, students were required to demonstrate their knowledge and skills in baler identification, gas cut welding skills, and electrical wiring skills.
