AlO*Lancaster Farming,. Saturday, April 2, 1994 OPINION The Prophet’s Easter Story WHO hath believed our report? And to whom is the arm of the Lord revealed? For he shall grow up before him as a tender plant, and as a root out of a dry ground: he hath no form nor comeliness; and when we shall see him, there is no beauty that we should desire him. He is despised and rejected of men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief: and we hid as it were our faces from him; he was despised, and we esteemed from not. Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted. But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed. All we like sheep have gone astray: we have turned every one to his own way; and the Lord hath laid on him the iniquity of us all. He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth; he is brought as a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is dumb, so he openeth not his mouth. He was taken from prison and from judgment; and who shall declare his generation? For he was cut off out of the land of the living: for the transgression of my people was he stricken. And he made his grave with the wicked, and with the rich in his death; because he had done no violence, neither was any deceit in his mouth. Yet it pleased the Lord to bruise him; he hath put him to grief; when thou shall make his soul an offering for sin, he shall see his seed, he shall prolong his days, and the pleasure of the Lord shall prosper in his hand. He shall see of the travail of his soul, and shall be satisfied; by his knowledge shall my righteous servant justify many; for he shall bear their inquiries. Therefore will I divide him a portion with the great, and he shall divide the spoil with the strong; because he hath poured out his soul unto death; and he was numbered with the trans gressors; and he bare the sin of many, and made intercession for the transgressors. To Work Horses With Care This wet spring has not allowed us to break horses in slowly for fieldwork. Thus, it becomes very important to take it easy with workhorses the first couple of days when spring fieldwork begins. Give your horses a break period ically and do not make the work day too long for a given work horse. Elmer Lapp. Lancaster County horseman, offers these additional tips: • Wash neck and shoulders of your horses every evening. • Make sure collars and haines fit properly. • Have your single and double trees as wide as possible to prevent rubbing sores on the horses’ legs. • Use tick face collars or use pads with leather collars to prevent sores. • Reduce the amount of com in the diet Feed oats, bran, and lots of hay instead. By properly taking care of your horses and ensuring their comfort, PCA annual meeting at Pennsylva- Beef E; F r She White Sate, Maryland State Fairgrounds, Timonium, Md., 6 ■ p.m. Maryland State Holstein Show, Maryland State Fairgrounds, Timonium, 9 a.m. Pond Management Meeting, Ray mond Goeringcr Farm, Tunk hannock, 9:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Fruit pruning demo, Bertram’s Orchard, Honesdale, 1 p.m.-3 p.m. Guernsey Breeders Association Kentucky National Show and Sale, Louisville, Ky. To Teach Children About Dogs Dogs make great pets and are man’s best friend. However, dogs do pose a safety risk, especially with children. Seventy percent of fatal dog bites occurred to children less than 10 years old. By teaching children some basic safety rules, we may minimize dog bites. Teach children from an early age not to be cruel to, poke at, or tease dogs. Never leave a child alone with a dog. Teach children to respect dogs during dog activities such as eating, drinking, or playing. Never approach or attempt to play with a strange dog. Keep children away from sick or injured dogs and female dogs with litters. Finally, insert yourself between a child and a dog when the situa tion appears dangerous, such as when a child is harassing the dog. To Check Milk Replacer For Calves Glenn Shirk, extension dairy v r 9Y LAWRENCE W ALIHOUSF WHERE IS YOUR DESTINY? April 3,1994 Background Scripture: Mark 16:1-8; Romans 8:12-27 Devotional Reading: Luke 24:1-11 Someone has said that “Easter is nothing more than wishful long ing for pie-in-the-sky by-and-by.” Perhaps that’s what it is for some people, but for many of us it is a lot more. For some of us, Easter is pri marily the celebration of a monu mental event in the past: Jesus Christ resurrected from the tomb almost two thousand years ago. Without a doubt, Easter is that all history turns on that single event but it is also much more. For others, Easter is seen as essentially the promise of a future deliverance for Christ’s followers: as he was victorious over the grave, so shall we be. And Easter is that, too all our hopes and fears turn on that assurance but it is still much more. For still others, Easter is the reality that helps us to meet the challenge of the present moment: the resurrection and eternal life can be experienced now as well as then. Surely, Easter is that, too without that power daily life would crush us and we would emerge as victims instead of victors. ALL OF THE ABOVE Actually, Easter is all of the above. Because of Christ’s victory over the grave two thousand years ago, you and I trust in our own survival of death some time in the future. And. because of that future assurance of victory, we can live victoriously in the present moment No, it is not just ancient history or pie-in-the-sky, but pow er for the present so long as we understand what it means for us: human destiny lies, not in the material world, but in the realm of the spirit. agent, raises the question, “Do the milk replacers you are feeding to your calves provide enough nutri ents for rapid growth?” According to Shirk, this depends on the kind and amount fed. For calves to consume as many nutrients as they would from a feeding of whole milk, it may be necessary to increase the recom mended feeding rates of some replacers by SO percent To determine the amount you need to feed, calculate the amount of nutrients your calf would con sume when fed whole milk. A calf's whole milk requirements is approximately 10 percent of its body weight. Compare this to the nutrient analysis and dilution rate on the feed tag of the milk replacer. Also, for best results, choose replacers that are made from milk based products and contain at least 20 percent protein and 20 percent fat. Young calves sometimes have difficulty digesting soy based pro ducts and may develop scours. Remember, as calves develop in size, increase feeding rates accordingly. Feather Profs Footnote: “To attain the best from people, chose to think and believe the best about them." Now the importance of that statement lies in the fact that most of us do not live as if that is true. To the contrary, we live as if our destiny is to be found in the mater ial world, nowhere else. We find our security, our pleasure, our suc cess in material things. We treat the physical body as if it is the chief vehicle of our selfhood. But if life has any message for us it is that the physical, material realities of life are the one thing we can count on losing. And the one thing that lives beyond the veil of death is that which is of the Spirit As Paul says to the Romans, “So then, brethren, we are debtors, not to the flesh for if you live according to the flresh you will die, but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body you will live” (8:12). BY THE SPIRIT That does not denigrate mater ial things or the physical body. I love the material world in all of its beauty and wonder. 1 enjoy the flesh that God has given me. There is nothing wrong in the material world so long as we understand that it is not our des tiny. Our destiny is with the Spirit. When the physical world and the spiritual worlds collide, go with the latter. As Paul put sit, “For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh... but those who live according to the Spirit set their minds on the things of the Spirit To set the mind on the flesh is death, but to set the mind on the Spirit is life and peace” (8:5-7). Easter reminds us once again that human destiny is to be found, not with the body, not with the physical realities, but with the Spirit So, to what destiny are you journeying?
