The dedication of the totally
new Poultry Education and
Research Center will Mice place on
Thursday, May 19 on the Penn
State Campus. This new facility
consists of six separate buildings
containing approximately 50,000
square feet and costing more than
$6 million.
The day will tun with a sympo
sium program in the Agricultural
Science and Industries -Building.
Drs. Roland Leach and Guy Bar
ba to, members of the Department
of Poultry Science faculty, will
open with two short lectures on
their research programs. Dr. Leach
will. address the evolution of
research on skeletal development
and Dr. Barba to will discuss gene
tic modification of growth and
development.
The keynote address will be
delivered by Dr. W. J. (Bill)
Stadelman, who received both his
master’s and doctorate degrees
from Penn State in the 19405. After
completing his degrees, Stadelman
and his wife (also a Penn State
alumnus) first moved to Washing
ton State University and then to
Purdue University. There, Stadel-
man embarked on an outstanding
teaching and research career in
poultry science and food science.
We at Penn State ate extremely
pleased and delighted to have Dr.
Stadelman return to his alma mater
to present the dedicatory keynote
address.
Governor Robert Casey, Penn
State President Joab Thomas, and
College of Agricultural Sciences
Dean Lamartine Hood will be tak
ing part in the formal dedication
ceremonies at the new Education
and Research Center at 11 a.m. on
May 19. Following comments by
each. Governor Casey will cut the
ribbon, officially opening the Cen
ter. Tours of the facilities will fol
low lunch, which will be served
under tents on the site.
The new education and research
center will provide the faculty in
the Department of Poultry Science
with an opportunity to train under
graduate and graduate students as
well as conduct research in some
of the best designed and equipped
facilities in the country. Four state
of-the-art environmental cham
bers, capable of controlling temp
erature, relative humidity, light,
ventilation, and large enough to
hold ISO birds each will be thefoc

This building also contains a class
room, incubators, seven battery
rooms, feed mixing, and a surgery
suite.
The Meat Bird Building con
tains four quadrants with 24 pens
each, providing a total of 96 pens.
Each pen is equipped with nipple
drinkers (a dome drinker for turkey
poults), a pan feeder, and will hold
30 to 35 broilers or a like number
of young turkey poults. The Pullet
Building is equipped with two
rows of commercial brood/grow
cages and contains four large and
six smaller rooms that can be used
for either floor or battery studies.
This building also contains the
central feed mixing facility.
The Layer/Turkey 'Building is
the largest structure on the
Research Center and contains four
rows of commercial layer cages,
six smaller cage rooms, anda large
egg processing area. Further, 24
market turkey pens are located in a
separate wing of the building.
The Breeder Building is
designed with four rows of artifi
cial insemination cages. Forty
