Cumberland County 4-H’ers Receive BETH MILLER Cumberland Co. Correspondent NEWBURG (Cumberland Co.) A lot of well-de served awards were given out during the 38th annual Cumberland County 4-H Dairy Banquet held at the New Hope Church in Newburg. The Outstanding First-Year-Member Award was won by Aaron Conunan. the son of Mr. and Mrs. Steven Corn man of Boiling Springs. Some of Aaron’s accomplishments during his first year were perfect attendance at the club meetings, giving a dairy demonstration at the County Speak-Out night and participating in the Dairy Bowl and dairy judging activi ties. He competed in the county, district, and state dairy shows and exhibited the reserve champion Brown Swiss at the 4-H Roundup. Aaron also served as social chairman of the dairy club during this first year. Scott Walton of Carlisle was the runner-up for the Out standing First-Year-Member Award. Emily Dietrich, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Dietrich of Newburg, won the Outstanding 4-H Dairy Member Award. Emily just completed her eighth year in the Blue Moun tain Dairy Club, where she was the treasurer. She compet ed in the county, district, and state dairy shows, exhibited the reserve grand champion Jersey at the 4-H Roundup, had the grand champion at the district dairy show and also qualified to go to the National Youth Show in Kentucky. Emily also competed at State Achievement Days in the dairy judging contest, did an impromptu speech during county Speak-Out Night, and did a radio spot promoting 4-H. She was part of a 4-H exchange group to Texas and was a counselor at the 4-H Environmental Camp. In addition to winning the Outstanding Member Award, Emily took home the 4-H Achievement Award for her high score in the county Achievement Record Judging. Matthew Day, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Curtis Day, won the Merle Miller Memorial award. Matthew just finished his seventh year in the county wide dairy club, where he served as county council repre sentative. He completed projects in dairy and teen leader ship, is assistant social chairman for the county council, and played an important role in adding 4-H radio spots and promoting 4-H at Speak-Out Night He participated in the Penn State Dairy Judging Con test State Achievement Days, the Pennsylvania All- American Dairy Judging Contest and was a member of the State 4-H Judging Team and competed at the national level in Madison, Wis. Matthew also is coaching a team for the Penn Slate Judging Contest is a member of the Senior Dairy Bowl team, and coached a junior team for the Junior Holstein Convention.
