Quality time has a special meaning for farm families. “The most important time you can spend with your child ren is when you train them to do a farm task and then super vise them the first time they do it alone," said Lynne Yontz, program coordinator for Farm Safety 4 Just Kids. Yontz told a break-out ses sion at the National Com Growers Association’s Com Classic that 5,000 farm child ren are seriously injured each year and 300 are killed in pre ventable on-farm accidents. The session, sponsored by ICI Seeds, was offered to the near ly 2,000 Corn Classic attendees. ‘Two-thirds of the fatalities occur to children under thir teen, but even more shocking,” said Yontz, "is the fact that half of the deaths are children under five.” The most critical ages are four, when curious and fearless children are first allowed out side alone, and 14, when teena- poor on pigweed. Our conference is made possi ble in part by all of the industry supporters who were exhibitors and also those who made spe cial contributions. We’d like to thank all of those who exhi bited at the conference this year for their support. We’d also like to thank those groups who made contributions to the program in other ways. First, we appreciate the cof fee and donuts that were sup plied by Hoffman Seeds- they were a welcome addition to the morning program. We’d also like to thank the Ohio Coro Growers Association for shar ing some of the expenses for their executive director to meet with us and Pioneer Hi-bred and Hoffman Seeds for spon soring two excellent speakers. Without this industry sup port, it would be more difficult to bring in the quality speakers that our Com Conference is known for. M
