DEKALB, 111. Dekalb Gene
tics Corporation said that it is re
leasing 23 new seed products for
sale to fanners in the United
States.
The new products include 12
new com hybrids, the product line
that accounts for most of Dekalb’s
seed sales and the largest protion
of its research budget
In 1993, Dekalb released a total
of 25 new products, including 13
com hybrids. During the past se
veral years, the company has sig
nificantly increased die number of
new product offerings. As a result
the company is strengthening its
ability to offer formers, in every
maturity zone, a solid package of
seed products.
“Most fanners plant three to
four different com hybrids,” said
Bruce P. Bickner, chairman and
chief executive officer. “With our
expanded com product line, we
feel we can provide every farmer
with a package of hybrids that will
spread their risk in terms of ma
turity and genetic diversity.”
Bickner added that all of the new
com hybrids were bred from pro
prietary germplasm, and that over
all, about 95 percent of Dekalb’s
com sales this year will be from
proprietary hybrids.
The new hybrids and varieties
are targeted for specific areas
where their performance features
can provide substantial economic
benefits to farmers. The 12 com
hybrids cover all major maturity
zones, offering improved perfor
mance under a variety of farm
management practices. In 1993,
Dekalb’s commercial com hy
brids provided a 5.5 percent ad
vantage compared to the average
yield in the United States. Bickner
noted that he expects the new re
leases to add to Dekalb’s perfor
mance advantage in future com
parisons. Several of the hybrids
also provide larger seed size, a
characteristic many farmers pre
fer.
The new releases include three
com hybrids for the northern Com
Belt (the 90- to 100-day relative
maturity zone, representing 8.5
million acres); three hybrids for
the central Com Belt (the 100- to
110-day relative maturity zone,
representing 21.4 million acres);
three hybrids for the southern
Com Belt (the 110- to 115-day re
lative maturity zone, representing
19.8 million acres); a 120-day hy
brid for the 4.0 million acre south
ern U.S. market; and two hybrids
for specialty com markets.
