Gardening Classes
GREENSBURG (Westmoreland Co.) The West
moreland County office, Penn State Extension and the
Gieensburg Garden Center are co-sponsoring a series of
garden, landscape, and nature seminars at Westmoreland
County Community College. These classes are open to
anyone with interest and enthusiasm for gardening or
nature. Instructors are Pennsylvanians who are experts on
their topics and understand Pennsylvania soils and cli
mate. Classes will be held on consecutive Tuesday even
ings, March IS. 22, and 29.
On the evening of March IS, gardeners will be able to
choose two one-hour classes. These include “Basic Peren
nial Gardening,” “The Herb Border,” “Apples for Pen
nsylvania Gardens,” and “Wildflowers of Western
Pennsylvania.”
The second week of the program, March 22 gardeners
can attend one of the following two hour seminars:
“Choosing Small Trees for Pennsylvania Landscapes” -
David Quatchak. Penn State extension horticulturist,
Allegheny County.
“Landscape Design Tor the Homeowner,” - Mark
D’Amico, landscape architect or “Pennsylvania Veget
able Gardening” - Eric Oesterling, Penn State Extension
horticulturist. Westmoreland County.
The sessions will culminate on March 29 when nation
ally known author and speaker Charles Thomas of Lily
pons Water Gardens will show gardeners how to “Create
Beautiful Water Gardens.” Water gardening is one of the
fastest growing and most exciting types of gardening. Get
your water gardening started right by taking the advice of
this nationally recognized expert. Register with West

Landscape Seminar
For Homeowners
COLLEGE PARK, Md. Just in time for spring; A
Landscape Symposium for Homeowners will be offered
on April 9 by the Home and Garden Information Center of
the Cooperative Extension Service, University of Mary
land at College Park. Scheduled for 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m„
the symposium will be held at Howard Community Col
lege in Columbia.
“The intent of the program,” says regional extension
horticulture specialist Ray Bosnians, “is to provide home
owners with information on plants and environmentally
sound horticulture practices they can use to maintain
healthy lawns and gardens.” Speakers will emphasize
integrated pest management (IPM) and limited use of trad
itional pesticides and fertilizers.
Among the topics to be covered:
• Low-Maintenance Landscaping;
• Maintaining a Healthy Lawn;
• Composting Made Easy;
, • Insects: the Good, Bad and Ugly; and
• Diseases: the Wilted, Spotted and Dying.
Advance registration is suggested. Fees are $2O each, or
$3O for two adult family members. (The fee for Extension
master gardeners is $l5 each, or $22 for two master gar
deners residing in the same household.) Registration at the
door will cost $25.
