The Great Pancake Race
Pancakes have been the traditional feast on Shrove Tuesday
in Britain, Germany, and Scandinavia since the thirteenth
century The bell calling the penitent to church actually
became known as the pancake bell According to legend, in
1 44*s in Olney, England, a harried housewife raced off to
church still clutching her frying pan complete with cakes'
Every year since, the Pancake Race has been held in Olney
on Shrove Tuesday Townswomen over Ift years old, clad in
aprons and head scarves, race from the marketplace to the
church (415 yards), flipping the pancakes three times en
