Berks County 4-H’ers Attend
National Congress
Christine Hunter and Lisa Ges
chwindt were part of 38 delegates
from Pennsylvania to attend the
five-day National 4-H Youth Con
gress held at the Chicago Hilton
and Towers in December repre
senting the Pennsylvania 4-H and
Youth Development program.
Delegates were selected from
the more than 119,000 4-H mem
bers in Pennsylvania based upon
their record of community
involvement, excellence in their
selected program area, and leader
ship skills.
They joined more than 1,500
delegates from across the nation in
attending the 72nd Annual
National 4-H Congress, jointly
sponsored by the National 4-H
Council, United States Depart
ment of Agriculture, and private
donors.
Lisa a graduate of Hamburg and
has been a member of the Leesport
4-H Club for 11 years, focusing on
the clothing and textile project.

Sponsor Youth Turkey
Hunting, Outdoor Clinic
The Berks County 4-H program
is sponsoring an NRA Youth
Turkey Hunting and Outdoor
Appreciation Clinic on Friday,
March 11 from 7 p.m.-9 p.m. and
Saturday, March 12 from 9:30
a.m. - 4:30 p.m. in the Berks
County Agricultural Center.
The clinic is for youth 11-15
who are interested in turkey hunt
ing and the outdoors.
Youth who registered must be
accompanied by an adult. The
clinic consists of two components,
turkey hunting certification, and
outdoor appreciation workshops.
The turkey hunting aspect cov
ers hunting skills, calling, safety,
ethics, and information on the
wild turkey. Participants will be
able to choose two of three out
door appreciation workshops.

Christine, a graduate of Oley
Valley High School, has been a
4-H member for 11 years, taking
projects in sheep, swine, horse,
foods, clothing, dogs, and veget
able gardening. She has served in
numerous offices in all her clubs
and has been a teen leader for six
years. Christine has been active on
the county level and very active
exhibiting a variety of her own
livestock at the fairs. She has also
been a resident 4-H camp counse
lor for the past five years. Christ
ine is a freshman at Temple Uni
versity, and is the daughter of Pat
ricia Hunter of Fleetwood.

skills, Connie Mertz, outdoor wri
ter and author of “Kids Games” in
the Pennsylvania Games News;
wildlife art, Kerry Holtzman,
Berks County wildlife artist; and
videotaping in the outdoors, Dave
Ehig, best known as Mr. Black
powder and host of five Quest
videos.
Turkey hunting instructors
include Steve Werley; George
Williams; and Skip Shaich, who is
a member of the Quaker Boy Pro
staff. The cost is $8 per person,
which includes lunch and all prog
ram materials.
