Six Weeks of Winter
Traditionally, Candlemas Day (February 2) was the day to
prepare for planting the crops, so forecasting an early
spring, or a lingering winter, was important. Sunshine on
Candlemas Day indicated a return of winter In some areas,
an animal was also part of the folklore A bear brought the
news in France and England, while Germans had their bad
gers German immigrants to Pennsylvania in the 1800 s
brought the legend to America. Finding no badgers, but lots
o( groundhogs, they adopted the New World species to fit the
lore, and in Punxsulawney. Pennsylvania, a star was born!
// Candlemas Day he warm and bright,
x Winter will take another kite,
But if Candlemas Day brings cold
V - * " and rain,
Winter is gone, and won 'l come again.
