Broadstrike +Dual 7.67 L is a
new product being marketed by
Ciba and DowElanco for use in
field, silage, seed com, and soy
beans. This product contains
7,47 pounds metolachlor
(Dual) plus 0.2 pound flumet
sulam per gallon. Flumetsulam
belongs to a new herbicide fam
ily called the sulfonamides. The
sulfonamides are amino acid
synthesis inhibitors specifically
blocking the same process as
the sulfonylureas and imidazo

plant or preemergence for
annual grass control plus con
trol or suppression of some
broadleaf weeds. Acetachlor
shows good control of pigweed
species, fair control of lambs
quarters, and suppression of
common ragweed.
Tough 3.75 EC was labeled
for use in com in spring of
1993, but few people had an
opportunity to use it. The active
ingredient in Tough is pyridate,
a foliar applied contact-type
herbicide (photosynthesis
inhibitor).
Tough is applied at 1 to 2
pints/acre and is effective on
lambsquarters, pigweed, and
nutsedge and is rather weak on
velvetleaf and either of the rag
weed species. Typical applica
tions are tank-mixed with atra
zine to broaden the spectrum of
control. Com shows good toler
ance to pyridate, so crop safety
is of little concern.
Herbicide-Resistant
Crops
The interest in developing
herbicide-resistant crops con
tinues to grow. Several new
com hybrids are being released
in 1994 with the IR/IT gene for
imidazolinone resistance. At
least three seed companies are
marketing IR/IT hybrids
including Pioneer, ICI Seeds,
and Ciba/Funks. Some of these
new varieties are probably bet
ter suited for the northeastern

growing conditions than previ
ous ones. The primary areas
where the IR/1T hybrids fit arc:
• Where carryover concerns
exist from the previous sea
son’s sulfonylurea or imidazo
linone herbicide.
• Where Pursuit herbicide is
an appropriate choice for annu
al weed control (e.g. shatter
cane). Another reason may
include greater freedom of
insecticide choice.
STS soybeans (sulfonylurea
tolerant) will be available on a
wider scale in 1994 for use with
certain sulfonylurea herbicides
that are already labeled for soy
beans. As with the IR/IT com
hybrids, the newer soybean var
ieties may be belter suited to
northeastern conditions.
Several herbicide resistant
crop areas to watch for include
glyphosate or Roundup resis
tant soybeans which may be
available as early as 1995, and
glufosinate (ignite) and sethox
ydim (Poast) resistant com
hybrids.
