>g< NEW HERBICIDE PRODUCT UPDATE William S. Curran Assistant Professor Weed Science Penn State There have been a number of major label changes or new for mulations that com and soy bean growers should be aware of this year. I have summarized the important points on each below. Always be sure to con sult the label before applying any of these products. Cyanazine products (Bladex, Extrazine, and Cycle) will con tain new “best management practice” guidelines for ground and surface water protection. The changes are similar to what atrazine went through in 1993. The following is an overview of the major changes. Rate restrictions; • a. Do not apply more than 6.5 pounds total cyanazine per acre per year to any land area. • b. On highly credible land (HEL), if plant residues are less than 30 percent, do not apply more than 3 pounds total cyana zine per acre per year. Setback and buffer zones: • a. Do not mix, load, rinse, or wash within 50 feet of any well unless specific safeguards are in place (see a label for spe cific requirements). • b. Do not apply aerially or by ground within 66 feet of the points where field surface It Pays To Plant With A ZIMMERMAN’S FARM SERVICE 'A Mile West Off Rt. 501 On School Rd., Bethel, Pa. 717-933-4114 water runoff enters perennial or intermittent streams and rivers or within 200 feet around natur al or impounded lakes or reser voirs. The setback or buffer must planted to a crop or seeded with grass or other suitable crop on HEL. Bicep II is a formulation of Bicep (atrazine plus metolach lor) that contains a safening agent to increase com protec tion. This product may not be widely marketed in the Northeast. Buctril Gel is a gel encapsu lated formulation of bromoxy nil (Buctril) that increases user and environmental safety. Concert SP is a water disper able granule containing 12.5 percent chlorimuron (Classic) plus 12.5 percent thifensulfu ron (Pinnacle). The DuPont product will be sold as 2-ounce soluble packs treating four acres each. This product is labeled for use in soybeans. Dual II is a formulation of metolachlor that contains a safening agent to increase com protection. This product may or may not be widely marketed in the Northeast. Frontier 7.5 L is labeled for com and should be labeled for use in soybeans by the 1994 season. Frontier (dimethena mid) is similar to Dual or Lasso in weed control activity, but is used at about 60 percent of the equivalent metolachlor active ingredient (Dual) rate. Use rates for soybeans should be similar to those used in com. Guardsman 5E is a new pre- WHITE PLANTER ■ Air Metering and Finger Pickup ■ Double Frame Models mixture from Sandoz that con tains 2.33 pounds dimethena mid (Frontier) plus 2.67 pounds atrazine. The use rate is 2.5 to 5 pints per acre. This product is labeled for use in com. Harmony Extra 75DF (thifensulfuron plus tribenu ron) may be applied early pre plant (at least 45 days ahead of planting) to increase knock down activity in front of com or soybeans. Harmony Extra would typically be tank-mixed with Roundup or other system ic herbicides for increased activity on problem perennial weeds such as wild garlic, briars, and dock species. Pentagon 60DG is a 60 per cent active pan granulated for mulation of pendimethalin (Prowl) from American Cyana mid labeled for use in com and soybeans. Sencor DF received a 2(ee) label for a reduced rate applica tion for control of common and mouseear chickweed, red dead nettle, henbit, and Virginia pep perweed in established alfalfa. The rate is 'A to \-'A pounds of 75DF per acre. Sencor is mark eted by Miles Inc. of Kansas City, Mo. Synchrony STS is a water dispersible granule containing three parts chlorimuron to one part thifensulfuron. This DuP ont product is targeted for use with STS (sulfonylurea tolerant) soybean varieties. ■ Vertical Fold ■ Mounted White BY WHITE-NEW IDEA Vanquish 4S is a diglycola mine salt (DGA) formulation of dicamba that is now labeled for use on grass pastures. The reduced vapor pressure charac teristics of Vanquish may be promoted as a means of reduc ing the vapor drift potential of dicamba. Chlorimuron Premixes. Dupont markets several diffe rent formulations of soybean herbicides that contain the active ingredient chlorimuron (Classic). These products con tain either linuron (Lorox) or metribuzin (Lexone) in addi tion to the chlorimuron component. In order to avoid some of the confusion, here’s a quick over view of these chlorimuron pre mix formulations: • Canopy 75DG 6:1 metribuzin/chlorimuronused at 4 to 8 ounces/acre 10-month com and alfalfa. • Preview 75DG 10:1 metribuzin/chlorimuronused at Table 1. Recrop restrictions in months for chlorimoron pre mixes for soils with a pH less than 6.8. Higher pH soils may require an increased waiting period for safe recrop. Canopy and Preview are bet ter suited for the finer-textured soils (>2 percent organic mat ter) whereas because of the linuron, Gemini and Lorox Plus are typically used on the coarser-textured soil areas. Linuron is more easily tied up to clay and organic matter. Canopy and Preview are slight ly broader in spectrum than Gemini or Lorox Plus and prob ably require less rainfall for mobilization. However, because they contain a triazine, Canopy and Preview may be weaker on triazine-resistant weeds, especially lambsquar ters. In addition, recrop restric tions can differ slightly with the four products as shown in the following table: 10 12 10 12 10 12 10 187 12 10 10 (Turn to Page 25)
