HONESDALE (Wayne Co.)
The 67th annual meeting and din
ner of the Wayne County Dairy
Herd Improvement Association/
Pennsylvania D.H.I.A. was held at
Kuester’s Restaurant and Lounge,
at Beach Lake, PA.
Gary Rickard, Wayne County
D.H.I.A. Advisory Committee
member, conducted the annual
meeting business.
John Castrogiovanni, northeast
counties state director, Pennsylva
nia D.H.1.A., announced that
Pennsylvania D.H.I.A. will have
new member districts for 1994.
The new District 16 is to in
clude all Pennsylvania D.H.I.A.
member heads in Susquehanna,
Wayne and Pike coundes. This
will account for a total of over 2SO
dairy herds.
New revised Pennsylvania
D.H.I.A. By-Laws went into ef
fect as of Jan. 1. Also, the 1994

Wayne DHIA Holds Annual Meeting
Pennsylvania D.H.I.A. state an
nual meeting is scheduled for Feb.
18, at Toftrees Resort, near State
College.
Also, some rate increases will
be put in effect for the new testing
year.

briefly about Wayne County Dai
ry Promotion activities.
Ed Pruss, Wayne County Ex
tension agent, reviewed the “new”
Wayne County D.H.I.A. Annual
Report compiled by Pennsylvania
D.H.I.A. He added some addition
al Wayne County D.H.I.A. infor
mation, including a printed sum
mary and record of Wayne County
D.H.I.A. yearly production since
its inception as an association
back in 1927.
He announced the D.H.I.A. pro
duction averages for the
1992-1993 testing year. A total of
94 Wayne County herds repre
senting 4,684 cows completed the
most recent D.H.I.A. testing year
with an average production level
of 16,953 pounds of milk, 620
pounds of butterfat and 542
pounds of protein. The average
value of product (milk) above feed
cost was $1,210 per cow.
Rick Verbeek, sire programs
manager for Sire Power Inc.,
Tunkhannock, was the guest
speaker at this meeting. Rick men
tioned his responsibility for the
ongoing and successful GOLD
and LAMP Programs offered to
area dairymen by Sire Power Inc.
He also coordinates the work of
the young sire/daughter evalua
tions and the special SET work as
sociated with proving young A.I.
sires. Rick discussed the import
ance and value of using D.H.I.A.
information to successfully obtain
early, reliable production informa
tion on young sires.
The announcement and presen
tation of all of the production
awards and management awards
was conducted. They included:

Julie and Jim Yatsonsky receive an award from the Way
ne County/Pa. DHIA for the beat herd production improve
ment award for milk, butterfat and protein. Over the past
year, the couple’s herd showed an average increase in pro
duction by 2,169 pounds of milk, 64 pounds of of butterfat
and 76 pounds of protein.
