They are staples for consumer products such as biodegradable plastic, cos metics, and ink. The accomplish ments of these alternative uses for agricultural products will take center stage during National Agri culture Day 1994, according to an announcement made at the New Uses Council’s annual conference. The U.S. Department of Agri culture (USDA), the Alternative Agriculture Research and Com mercialization Center (AARC), and the New Uses Council (NUC) joined the organizer of National Agriculture Day, the Agriculture Council of America, in the announcement “The economic and environ mental benefits of new uses are astounding and provide promise for developing ratal communities. Now crops can be produced and processed all in the same com munity and that means jobs,” said Bob J. Nash, USDA undersecret ary for rural development. “National Agriculture Day offers a unique opportunity to let the mil lions of Americans who are fed and clothed by American produc ers know that we are truly ‘grow- Jamie Boyer. 2. By lis tening and responding to consum ers’ needs, agriculture will con- tinue to improve. New uses are a direct response to consumers’ environmental concerns, and National Agriculture Day pro vides an opportunity to tell this important story,” said Wm. Pat rick Nichols, president of the Agriculture Council of America. Jeff Gain, chairman of the NUC, said, “abundant traditional crops, and a variety of non traditional crops, can be used to their full potential, replacing non renewable resources with renew able environment-friendly ones. Corn, for example, is already being used to make fuel and biodegradable plastics. We’re excited that National Agriculture Day will focus on these important achievements and help educate consumers about agriculture’s ever-changing role in society.”
