HARRISBURG (Dauphin
Co.) —The annual Dairymen's
Association banquet again fea
tured the presentation of the presti
gious Charles E. Cowan and exten
sion awards. Tom Kelly of Tyrone
in Blair County received the Cow
an award and Robert Graves, ag
engineer at Penn State, received
the extension award.
Kelly graduated from Penn
State in 1958 and began his career
as an assistant county agent in
Blair County. He then served as a
Holstein fieldman to both the

Tom and his wife Peg had a life
long dream of owning and manag
ing their .own dairy farm. That
dream became a reality in 1974
when Spring Lane Farm was
established. Currently the farm

Tom is very active in his
church. Sinking Valley Presbyte
rian Church, where he serves as an
elder, treasurer and a Sunday
school teacher. Tom also has
served as the PTO president and
served on the advisory board of
Tyrone Area High School.
Tom and wife Peg have five
children. Brian, a district sales
manager with Atlantic Breeders.
Suzanne, director/teacher at the
Cumberland, Maryland Montes
sori School, Miriam, a junior at
Virginia Tech, Rebecca a senior at
Tyrone Area High School and
John David (J.D.) a freshman at
Tyrone.
The Kelly family was honored
in 1983 as the Blair County Farm
family of the year. Tom has
received many recognitions
including being named to the
National Honor Society for Agri
culture, Gamma Sigma Delta at
Penn State and in 1989 was
awarded the distinguished alum
nus award by Delta Theta Sigma
at Penn State.
The Charles E. Cowan award
was established to recognize dairy
fanners who have made major
contributions to the states.

with animal housing systems and
the storage, handling and utiliza
tion of animal waste. Bob received
his B.S. degree in Agriculture
from Cornell University in 1965.
Following graduation he worked
with the family dairy operation
while also getting his M.S. and
PhD. degrees from the University
of Massachusetts. In 1972 he
became Assistant Professor of Ag
Engineering at the University of
Wisconsin - Madison. He returned
to Massachusetts and Pine Mea
dow Farm, a 300 cow, 500 acre
dairy and crop farm in 1977 and
joined the Penn State faculty in
1982.
Graves has had a distinguished
career as an extension educator in
the area of structures and the envi
ronment. He is recognized nation
ally as a leader in the development
of agricultural engineering educa
tional programs and materials. He
has had a key role in the develop
ment of livestock waste manage
ment systems. He was a signific
ant contributor to a series of man
ure management information
pieces and was editor of the PA
