Goat Show Wraps Up 1994 Farm Show Competitor!
LOU ANN GOOD
Lancaster Farming Staff
HARRISBURG (Dauphin Co.)
The goat show wrapped up the
final competition at the Pennsylva
nia State Farm Show on Thursday.
Entries were dpwn because bad
weather prevented about 2S regis
tered participants from traveling to
the show, but with 180 head, com
petition remained stiff.
Clinching the coveted Best Doe
of Show title were Harold and Joan
Stump of Telford with their Alpine
GCH Stump Hollow TS Bonjour.
Championship blood runs heav
ily in the doe’s blood. In 1991, the
Stumps captqred the same presti
gious title with this year’s champ
ion doe’s dam.
Bonjour has' been a grand
champion for several years at
shows across the state. She milked
2,600 pounds in lactation which
compared to a cow translates into
26,000 pounds per lactation.
According to Jerome Mensch,
judge for the event and a herdsman
for a large dairy goat operation in
Maryland, the champion has good
angulation and a well attached,
shapely udder with lots of room.
The champion gave birth to doe
triplets this past year.
The Stumps, who raise 20
Alpines, said they became inter
ested in goats by accident. It hap
pened in 1981, when Harold built a
bam to house his antique bam
equipment. He thought it would be
good to add a part to keep a pet ani
mal. Someone talked them into
buying two pet goats. Later, an
acquaintance who was into show
ing goats, convinced them to enter
a show. That year, they placed at
the bottom of a large class.
“My husband couldn’t handle
that. He determined to move up so
he could at least get the last ribbon
that is handed out,” Joan said.
The next year, he did. But that
wasn’t good enough. He set his
sights on the grand champion title.
By 1985, the Stumps became seri
ous breeders. Championship rib
bons are now a permanent achieve
ment with their show string.
In the La Mancha division, Ann
Miller’s GCH Rockspring Pulsar
Dixie Debra was named champion.
The La Mancha champion is a
6-year-old two-star milker. It has
an excellent 90 classification and
received the Best Udder in its breed
at the National Goat Show held this
past summer.
Ann Miller shows the champion La Mancha GCH
Rockspring Pulsar Dixie Debra.
Miller raises 40 head ofToggcn
burgs and La Manchas on her Tel
ford farm and consistently wins
best of breed and best of show
titles.
Miller duplicated her champion
win in the Toggenburg division by
showing Rockspring COMM
Gabriele Gleam. The doe carries
two legs toward a championship,
but this year’s title did not count
because Farm Show competition is
a restricted show.
In the Nubian division, Jane
Schalitzky of Landisburg, Perry
County, took the grand champion
title with Deer Trail Chili Krystal.
It was the first time Schalitzky saw
one of her nine Nubians capture the
championship in her 10 years of
showing.
In the All Other Purebreds divi
sion, Jamie Harpster look the top
placing with her Sannen doe 40
Crossing Peaches & Cream. Jamie,
a 16-year-old from State College
has been showing for five years.
This was the first time, she showed
a champion from the 11-heqd herd.
In addition to Sannens, Jamie
raises Nubians and Toggenburgs.
In the Recorded Grades Divi
sion, a 7-year-old doe named Mari
na showed by Helen Snyder took
first place. It was the third year for
Snyder to win top placing with a
Nubian. Snyder raises 40 head of
Nubians and two head of recorded
breeds on her Newport farm.
Marina, who milks 4,000
pounds, is listed in the top 10 pro
duction record of DHIR.
