It was a day for the young horses to shine as Sherwood Farms, a two-farm, 150-acre oper ation run by Donald Sherwood and Gary and Brandon Groves, of Tunkhannock, showed the supreme draft horse at the state Farm Show last Saturday, taking home their first grand and supreme championship title. While Windermere Farms out of Spring Mills, and Omdorffs Bel gians, out of Waynesburg, two seemingly perennial winners at the Farm Show, aqd a number of other regular exhibitors faired well, the Sherwoods, relative newcomers to the Farm Show draft horse com petitions, showed their young mare, a foal at last year’s Farm Show, to place First among the top mare’s and stallions of each of the three breed divisions. Bom April 1992, SGF Dodie Marie, a Belgian was ranked by judge Crae Eller, from Arcadia, Indiana, over her half-brolher, the top Belgian stallion, shown by Omdorff’s Belgians. The Omdorff champion stallion was the junior champion, out per forming the senior champion Bel gian shown by Jerry and Shirley Ray, of Shelocta. In fact, it was Omdorff’s multi grand champion of the Farm Show Belgian stallion, Omdorff s Con golaise Supreme, who sired both the grand champion Belgians and the reserve champion Belgian. Williams, “Who was quite a horse man,” he said. “I didn’t grow up on a farm, still we have two genera tions of horsemen.” His uncle, on his mother’s side, raised some horses and Donald, who was named after his unde, used to help out at the fartn.
