The Lancaster Conservation District implemented Chesapeake Bay projects worth a total of $344,000 over the course of one year to cooperating farmers, according to Gerald Heistand, bay technician. Heistand spoke to about 30 agency and industry representa tives at the Lancaster County Con servation District meeting at the Stock Yard Inn on Wednesday night. The district is beginning to implement the new Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Resources stream bank fencing program, which is 100 percent cost-shared for farmers in the Che sapeake Bay drainage area. The district also reviewed vari- cooperating agencies Lancaster Fanning, Fridiy, January 7, 1994419 A total of 9,400 acres have been placed in conservation plans, according to Warren Archibald, district conservationist. Soil Con servation Service. About 18 new contracts were implemented in 1993, bringing the total under con tract to about 170. In addition, 25 new manure storage structures were installed in 1993, with IS still in the planning stages. Archibald said that there is renewed interest by farmers in sev eral experimental rotational graz ing projects under way in the coun ty. Also, interest in conservation tillage is picking up. In the month of December alone, the conservation district signed on six new cooperators, for a total of 223 acres in conservation plans. Also, new directors were elected at the meeting. They are James E. Huber, county commis sioner, Lancaster; Robert B. Lauf fer, Garden Spot High School agriscience teacher, Narvon; and Herbert N. Myer, Lampeter.
