Polls Show High Confidence In Dairy
(Continued from Pago A 1)
other national medical organiza
tion,” saidC. Manly Molpus, chief
executive officer of GMA.
Only 17 percent of those house
holds polled said they had “heard
or read anything about milk in the
news lately.” Of the 17 percent,
less than half associated the news
with BST. None of the small min
ority who said they decreased
their milk consumption cited BST
as the reason.
“It's heartening to know that
when Americans gave thanks this
past weekend they did so with the
full confidence that one of our
country’s greqt foods is as safe
and wholesome as ever,” said
Molpus.
Across ail three polls, there was
very little change in the combined
percentage of consumers whose
milk consumption either stayed
the same or increased.
However, the percentage of
consumers who reported increases
in milk consumption actually rose.
Milk Program
LEESPORT (Berks Co.)
Milk producers and others inter
ested are invited to comment on
USDA’s supplemental proposal
prohibiting excessive manufactur
ing allowances in state marketing
orders for milk. The public com
ment period ends January 31.
Under the supplemental prop
osal, states, to be in compliance,
would require plants to pay a price
for milk used in the production of
cheese or butter and nonfat dry
milk that is no less than the
respective Class 111 or Class 111-A
price effective in the Federal Milk
Order operating in the competitive
area.
Under the original proposal,
states using formulas to price milk
used to produce butter, nonfat dry
milk, or cheese could not use man
ufacturing allowances greater than
those used in the federal price sup-

climbing from 7.9 percent in the
first survey to 9.8 percent and 12.8
percent over the last two. (These
gains obviously reduced the per
centage of respondents who re
ported either the same or decreas
ed milk consumption.)
Among the three surveys, con
sumers' rating of their “trust” in
the milk supply also varied by no
more than one point (respondents
were asked to rate their trust in
milk on a scale of 1 to 100). Con
sistently, consumer trust in milk
rated better than tap water and
equal to or better than orange
juice.
All three surveys were conduct
ed by ICR Survey Research Group
in Media, Pennsylvania. Each sur
vey polled more than 1,000 house
holds (half of the respondents
were women) and reflects a 95
percent confidence level, plus or
minus 3.1 percent. The most re
cent survey was conducted Nov.
26-28. The other surveys were
conducted Nov. 5-7 and Nov.

the Berks County Agricultural
Stabilization and Conservation
Service (ASCS), said the current
price support allowance are $1.22
per hundredweight for milk made
into butter and nonfat dry milk and
51.37 for milk made into cheese.
“Written comments on the sup
plemental proposal, the original
proposal, and other available
options must be received no later
than January 31, the final dead
line, to be considered,’’ Troutman
said.
