Halcyon Days
The legend of the halcyon days begins in ancient times with
Halcyon, the daughter of Aeolus and wife of Ceyx. While
en route to consult the oracle at Claros, Ceyx was
drowned. Upon finding her beloved’s body washed ashore.
Halcyon threw herself into the sea, whereupon she and Ceyx
were transformed into kingfishers. They were given the
power to still the stormy winter seas for seven days before
and after the solstice while they built their nest on the water
and hatched their young. So today we have the halcyon days,
those days of lovely, tranquil weather in honor of
