STATE COLLEGE (Centre Co.) —These data are calculated using information pulled from Pennsylvania DHIA’s mainframe computer each week. It is a one-week summary representing approximately one fourth of the herds on test, as they are tested monthly. These data are valuable from a business management standpoint and can be used for comparing your operations to the averages from about one-fourth of the herds across the state. The size of dairy cattle is important, according to research reported by Dr. Les Hansen, of the University of Minnesota. An article in the Dec. 11 issue of Lancaster Farming by Dr. Larry Specht, Penn State University, Upcartw Firming, Smutty, Qmmb* H. imum Cow Size Matters stated that there seems to be an optimum cattle size for produc tion, health, and performance, based on research and comments ■by Hansen. And while that isn’t disputed, the headline of the article inaccu rately stated that cow size doesn’t really matter. However, it does. But Hansen’s comments call attention to the old adage, “Bigger isn’t always bet ter,” Specht said. lu Dahl Outside Wood Furnaces Hot Air and Hot Water.
