Com is Pennsylvania’s top Held crop. More than 1.3 million acres of com, worth an esti mated $4OO million, arc grown in the state each year. Most of that com is used as cattle feed in Pennsylvania’s large dairy industry. When com production suffers, the results can be far-reaching. The cost of dairy and livestock farming may rise, affecting farm income and possibly consumer prices. To help farmers address critical manage ment issues, Penn State’s College of Agricul tural Sciences will offer a com production satellite videoconference in January and February. The program will be downlinked and offered free of charge at several locations around the state. Participants can earn pesti cide recertification credit from the Pennsyl vania Department of Agriculture. “Com growers face many challenges in the effort to maintain optimal production,” said Dr. Gregory Roth, assistant professor of agronomy and coordinator of the satellite program. “This videoconference is designed to help farmers deal with a host of variables that affect efficiency, yields, profits, and the environment.” Roth said the seminar will cover seven key areas of com production: deep tillage, com rootworm management, planter adjustment and maintenance, weed management, plant populations and row spacings, nitrogen man agement, and harvest management. These topics will be divided into two one-hour seg ments, separated by a 30-minute break. The seminar will be offered January 21 from 9:30 a.m. to noon; February 15 from 1 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.; and February 22 from 7 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. For the seminar location nearest you or satellite and transponder infor mation, contact the Penn State Cooperative Extension office in your county or call Agri cultural Information Services at (814) (Continued from Pago D 3) 5-11 4-2 4-11 2-8 GE-H 5-0 3-3 GR-H GS-B 3-3 6-3 GS-H GS-H 3-1 5-9 GS-H 7-11 4-3 GS-H GS-H 4-5 Rfi GR-H 2-0 3-2 GR-H GR-H 3-0 3-5 8-8 GR-H 4-11 3-4 GR-H 7-2 6-7 GR-H GR-H 5-2 Conference Corn Growers 3.2 3.1 23,981 24,877 305 305 3.2 25,743 305 3.0 27,389 305 3.4 3.2 305 305 24,328 24,769 3.2 3.4 25,657 23,684 305 302 3.1 3.1 25,971 25,651 305 305 3.1 305 26,409 3.1 26,074 305 3.2 25,219 305 3.0 305 26,683 3.2 3.4 305 305 25,327 22,779 2.8 3.1 28,618 26,176 305 305 3.3 24,705 305 305 3.3 24,425 3.1 25,704 3.2 25,276 305 3.1 305 25,796 3.2 305 24,786 3.2 305 24,748 3.2 305 25,106 ONLY! $19.76 $37.50 1 In PA.
