Shown are, left to right, team coach Dr. J. Lee Majeskle, University of Maryland at College Park; assistant coaches Katharine Knowlton, UMCP, and Amy Brown Ingram of Marriottsvllle (Howard County). Dairy Cattle Judges Complete Successful Season COLLEGE PARK, Md. In baseball, it’s called “hit ting for the circuit” a single, double, triple, and home run by one player in the same game. With a little poetic license, achievements by this year’s Maryland 4-H dairy cattle judging teams could be described as “hitting for the circuit in the World Series of dairy cattle judging competition for youth.” One Maryland 4-H team placed second among 34 state teams on Sept. 28 in the National 4-H Dairy Cattle Judging Contest, held in conjunction with the World Daily Expo at Madison, Wis. The same team was third among IS state teams in the 4-H division on Sept 20 during the Pennsyl vania All-American Dairy Cattle Judging Contest at Har risburg, Pa. More recently, a second Maryland 4-H team placed first among 26 state 4-H and FFA delegations on Nov. 7 in the youth division of the North American International Dairy Cattle Judging Contest at Louisville, Ky. The "home run” punch for this year’s Maryland 4-H teams came from individual performances by a quartet of teen-agers: Brian R. Schnebly, 16, of Dry Run (Washing ton County); April Hall. 16, of Church Hill (Queen Anne’s County); Sean Johnson, 18, of Daisy (Howard County); and Kelli Savage, 17, of Petersville. a Frederick County resident with 4-H membership in Montgomery County. Brian placed first among 58 contestants in judging both Ayrshires and Jerseys at the Harrisburg event. April topped 132 contestants for overall individual honors at Madison. At the recent Louisville contest, Sean was high indivi dual among 103 contestants in Holstein breed judging, Kelly Myers was first in Guernseys, and Kelli Savage cap tured the Ayrshire crown with a perfect score of 100 points. Kelli’s neighbor. Holly Burall, IS, alsp of Petersville, placed second in Ayrshire breed judging, and she was a close second in the overall individual standings. The two young women helped propel Maryland to a first-place finish in Ayrshire judging as well as the overall team standings. Since the Louisville group often forms the backbone of next year’s Maryland 4-H dairy cattle judging team that competes at Harrisburg and Madison, Dr. J. Lee Majeskie, the team coach, is optimistic about 1994. Majeskie has coached the Maryland 4-H dairy cattle judging teams for 12 years. He is an animal sciences spe cialist for the Cooperative Extension Service. University of Maryland at College Park. His assistants for the Louis ville contest were Katharine Knowlton, a graduate research assistant at UMCP. and Amy Brown Ingram of Marriottsville (Howard County), who was the national champion 4-H dairy cattle judge in 1990.
