PENNSYLVANIA
PSEUDORABIES
VACCINATION
PROJECT

By now, swine pro
ducers should be aware
of the Pennsylvania
Pseudorabies Vaccina
tion Project. This is a
cost-sharing project
sponsored by the Pen
nsylvania Pork Produc
ers Council that has the
objective of getting all
grow/finish animals on
quarantined farms vac
cinated against pseudo
rabies this winter. It is
anticipated that high
participation by quaran
tined producers in this
project will decrease the
spread of pseudorabies
to pigs on neighboring
farms.
In conjunction with
the project, we are
encouraging -non
quarantined producers
who are threatened by
an infected herd in the
neighborhood to booster
their herds with pseudo
rabies vaccine. We have
determined that there
are about 200 swine pro
ducers who are within
two miles of an infected
herd and are not using
pseudorabies vaccine.
Often, swine produc
ers ask us whether
pseudorabies vaccine
will prevent their herd
from becoming
infected. According to
our investigations, the
answer is a resounding
“Yes!” We looked at
nonquarantined Pen
nsylvania swine herds
which have been using
pseudorabies vaccine
and are threatened by at
least one quarantined
herd within two miles.
We found 38 such
herds. These herds were
potentially exposed to
area spread of pseudora
bies for an average of 16
months, yet they all
have remained free of
the infection. Nine of
these herds have had a
neighbor with pseudora
bies for more than two
years.
We also looked at farms which
became quarantined to see if they
were using vaccine before they
became infected. Since 1989, 157
Pennsylvania swine herds have
been quarantined for pseudora
bies. Only two of these herds woe
being vaccinated before they
became infected. In one of these
two cases, a “hot strain” of pseudo
rabies infected the grow/finish ani
mals and signs of pneumonia were
seen. The grow/finish animals had
