Thompson Joins Cargill Effort
To Promote Farm Safety

tendees at the 65th National FFA
Convention on Thursday, Nov. 11
at the Marriott Downtown in Kan
sas City, Mo.
Thompson was only 18 years
old in January 1992 when he sur
vived a horrible farm accident in
which both of his arms were sev
ered below the shoulder by a pow
er take-off shaft. The incident
drew worldwide media attention
after reports that Thompson, who
was working alone, saved his own
life by rushing 400 feet to his par
ents’ Hurdsfield, N.D., home,
kicked open the door, and called
for help with a pen clenched in his
teeth. He then waited in the bath
tub so he wouldn’t get blood on
his mother’s carpet. John was
eventually flown to Minneapolis
where, eight hours after the acci
dent, doctors reattached his arms.
Thompson, a former member of
the FFA, said he wanted to attend
the convention “to keep people
constantly aware of the dangers
involved in farm work.”
On Friday, Nov. 12, Thompson
traveled 7S miles northeast to the
Cargill grain elevator in Forest
City, Mo., to meet with rural stu
dents at Mound City and Oregon
schools.

taking safety precautions after his
accident, Thompson said, “but as
soon as they’re out in the Held,
their minds are on getting things
done and they are not thinking
about the safe way of doing
things. The safe way takes more
time, and that is why so many
farmers continue to work danger
ously. I want to remind them how
easily an accident can happen," he
said.

stems from its year-old partner
ship with the nonprofit organiza
tion Farm Safety 4 Just Kids.
Farm Safety 4 Just Kids was
founded in 1986 in Earlham,
lowa, by Marilyn Adams, who
lost her 11-year-old son to a farm
accident.
Throughout North America,
more than 125 Cargill locations

Farm Safety 4 Just Kids. Cargill
has formed 12 chapters and spon
sored many events with Farm
