Maryland Angus Breeders’ Show Names Champions

Maryland Angus Breeders’ Show.
There were S 3 entries in the show
that was held August 28 in
Gaithersburg.
Topping the bull entires was
Vince, a February 1993 son of
Kesslers Rainman 002. Jason
Riggs, Brookeville, owns this
entry that was also the bull calf

Porcine Stress Syndrome (PSS),
since the mid-19605, is still preva
lent As producers select lean,
heavily muscled breeding stock to
take advantage of new carcass
grading premiums, PSS problems
may increase in the near future.
2. PSS in the worst form can
lead to sudden death in hogs during
time of loading or mating. If PSS
pigs survive the loading and trans
port process, the carcasses are
often pale, soft, and exudative.
That creates problems for both the
packer and the consumer.
3. Environment plays an impor
tant role. Fasting pigs before
slaughter, keeping pigs cool dur
ing transit, resting pigs for several
hours after unloading, and a rapid
chill time all help to reduce PSE
problems.
4. A new DNA blood test can
now distinguish between stress
positive and stress carrier pigs.
Some seedstock producers will use
champion.
The reserve grand champion

was previously awarded reserve
