Swags and Garlands
Begin with a 10- to 12-inch sec
tions of leftover branches of grape
vine, birch or willow. Using 24
gauge floriest’s wire, start to attach
sections of varied lengths together
with the wire. By keeping the wire
on the spool, you achieve a more
secure garland to decorage a stair
case or other places you might
want to wrap around the garland.
Be sure to attach the twigs or pine
with a beginning and an end. Sec
ure the wire by snipping the end"
and wrapping the excess wire tight
ly under the last sections you
joined together.
Canned Pumpkin Bread
314 cups flour
2Kcups sguar
2 cups pumpkin
Vi cup shortening
54 .cup chopped nuts (optional)
Vi cup water
4 eggs
2 teaspoons baking soda
VA teaspoons salt
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1 teaspoon ground nutmeg
‘A teaspoon baking powder
Cream shortening and sugar.
Beat in eggs, pumpkin, and water.
Sift together flour, baking powder,
soda, »ilt and spices and beat into
pumpkin mixture. Add chopped
nuts, if desired.
Fill 8 clean greased wide-mouth
canning pint jars half full with pre
pared batter. Bake open jars about
60 minutes in an oven at 325
degrees. When done, quickly
remove one hot jar at a time and
clean its sealing edge. Immediately
apply and firmly tighten a two
piece wide-mouth canning led. The
lid will form a vaccum seal as the
jar cools. Jan of cooled bread may
be stored with other canned foods
or placed in the freezer. The bread
is safe to eat as long as jars remain
vacuum sealed and free of mold
growth.
