DMancaster Farming, Saturday, November 6, 1993 FFA Members Receive National Recognition KANSAS CITY, Mo.—National recognition will be given to Pen nsylvania, Delaware, Maryland. New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Virgi nia, and West Virginia FFA members at the world’s largest annual youth gathering, the 66th National FFA Convention, to be held here, November 11-13. More than 29,000 FFA members, guests, and sup porters are expected to attend. The convention will feature action-packed sessions with addresses by top speakers from the fields of agriculture, education, government and entertainment. Confirmed speakers include Senator Larry Craig of Idaho; Dr. Augusta Kappner, assistant secretary for vocational and adult education, USDE; Dr. Jackie M. Allen, president of the Ameri can School Counselor Association; motivational speaker Emory Aus tin; Miss America Kimberly Clarice Aiken from South Carolina; cowboy poet Baxter Black; CNN news reporter John Holliman; Geri Jewell, actress, lecturer and comedienne; former FFA member John Thompson; and former national FFA secretary, Coby Shorter 111. Shorter is sponsored by the Western Retail Implement and Hard ware Association as a special project of the National FFA Founda tion. Thompson is sponsored by Cargill; Austin is partially sponsored by United Telephone Midwest; and Miss America is sponsored by Chevy Trucks. Black’s travel is provided by Passport Travel. Opening night festivities on Wednesday, Nov. 10, will include a performance by Grammy award winner Lee Greenwood, sponsored by Commerce Bank of Kansas City. In addition, convention participants will have opportunities to attend leadership workshops, tour Kansas City manufacturing and agribusiness sites, take in American Royal Livestock Show and Rodeo performances, and meet with fellow FFA members from around the nation. Other highlights will include the selection of top FFA members in 29 agricultural proficiency award areas, 12 national career skill com petitions, plus prepared and extemporaneous public speaking con tests, and a parliamentary procedure contest. The American Star Far mer and American Star in Agribusiness will be named, and 1,276 members will receive the American FFA Degree, the organization’s highest award. Top chapters in safety, community development and overall chapter activities will also be recognized. In addition, the 1993-1994 national FFA officers will be elected and installed. The National Agricultural Career Show and the National FFA Alumni Convention are held in conjunction with the FFA convention.
