U.S. Soybean Production Down LEESPORT (Berks Co.) The U.S. Department of Agricul ture forecasts a 1.91 billion bushel soybean crop for 1993,13 percent less than last year’s crop, and, if realized, the lowest since 1988. Above-average rain in the Mideast and drought in the Southeast con tributed to a lower production forecast for the crop. Agriculture officials say expected lower soybean produc tion resulted in a price forecast of $6-$7 per bushel for the 1993-1994 season. The season average price of soybeans has not exceeded $6 per bushel since 1988-1989, when the drought pushed the average price to $7.42 per bushel. "Eligible producers may obtain price support loans on their 1993 soybeans at $5.12 per bu?hel,” Richard Troutman, chairman of the Berks County Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service (ASCS), said. Local pro ducers placed about 200,000 bushels of 1992-crop soybeans under price support loan, obtain ing operating cash and holding their crop for possibly higher prices later in the year. Troutman said farmers have until May 31, 1994 to obtain a price support loan on their 1993 crop of soybeans.
