Lady Liberty
On October 28. 1886, Auguste Bartholdi’s statue, Liberty
Enlightening the World was unveiled on Bedloe’s Island in
New York Harbor. Bartholdi was on hand to personally
reveal his creation to the expectant crowds below. But other
than Mrs. Bartholdi and the 8-year-old daughter of a French
official, it was an all-male crowd gathered on the island.
Excluding women from public events was not unusual then,
and many women felt they should do some enlightening of
their own As a boat filled with suffragettes approached the
island, a woman’s voice rang out across the water “We praise
the embodiment of liberty as a woman. But is it not despica
ble that if Liberty had life, she could vote neither in the
United States nor in France?” With that, a cannon was fired,
the veil dropped, and Liberty was revealed
Liherty is the one thing you can t have unless you
give it to others.
