The Light Dawns
On October 21, 1879, Thomas Alva Edison succeeded in
producing the first practical incandescent light. After test
ing literally thousands of different materials over thirteen
months, Edison tried a filament of carbonized cotton in a
vacuum inside a glass bulb. This combination resulted in a
lamp which was capable of burning for forty hours. Although
most experts had predicted certain failure, the public's faith
in the determined inventor was such that prices of shares in
gas-lighting firms dropped when he announced his
plan to work on an electric lighting system.

EARTHWISE
Believe it or not, you can
successfully clean your
oven without using prod
ucts that require either a gas
mask or opening all the win
dows and leaving the house
for several hours. Before j
going to bed, sprinkle the i
bottom of a cold oven with
water, then cover the grease
and grime with baking soda
and sprinkle "again with
water. Let soak overnight
and wipe up in the morn
ing. Use a green “scrub
by” pad to loosen stub-
born spots. Be sure to
rinse and wipe up all
the baking soda.
