Lamb Sale
READING (Berks Co.) The Berks County 4-H
Market Lamb Sale was held at the Reading Fairgrounds on
Saturday, September 25.
Tom B. Newpher, Fleetwood, sold the grand champion
market lamb to East Penn Manufacturing, Reading for
$285. Tom, who graduated from Topton High School, is
18 and works full-time saving his money for a college edu
cation in electrical engineering. This was Tom’s first year
in the Berks Co. 4-H Sheep and Lamb Club. He had the
champion lightweight market lamb, and the champion
Shropshire ram and ewe in the breed classes at Reading
Fair,
Stephanie J. Bowman. Lenhartsville, is 16, and a junior
at Kutztown High School. She sold the reserve champion
market lamb to Penn National Bank, Fleetwood, for $3BO.
This is Stephanie’s 7th year in the Berks Co. 4-H Sheep
and Lamb Club, where she is the vice president She is also
the vice president of the FFA in Kutztown and owns her
own flock of Dorset sheep. She received senior champion
fitter and third in senior showmanship at the Reading Fair.
Stephanie is the Berks County Wool Queen and won the
Senior division of the lead line class at Reading Fair by
modeling a wool outfit she made as a member of die Fleet
wood Community 4-H Club.
Katie A. Ramsay, Boyertown, sold the champion mark
et lamb pair to Oley Valley Feed, Oley, for $450. Katie,
who is 13 and an eighth grade student at Boyertown Junior
High West, is in her fifth year as a member of the Berks
County Sheep and Lamb Club.
With her Dorset flock, she combined the reserve
champion middleweight lamb and the champion light
middleweight lamb to win the champion market lamb
pair. She received second in showmanship and junior lead
line. Katie is the vice president of Top Notch 4-H Equest
rians, and has qualified with her paint mare for the State
4-H Horse Show in Harrisburg.
There were a total of 39 lambs sold for a gross value of
$6,470.
