TAKING TIME by Rebecca Escott Extension Home Economist Who Wins When We Hurry? The other day, a co-worker and I were recalling our activities growing up as children and teens. I remembered the important deci sion that my mom (thankfully) put before me when I was a teen. She said that she and dad would agree to pay for one set of weekly music lessons but if I wanted to take both voice lessons and piano lessons that I would have to pay for one of them. After a few weeks, I learned the valuable lesson of prioritizing and dropped piano lessons. That same year I looked at my other activities field hockey, winter sports cheerleading, track, school musi cals, Girl Scouts, 4-H, church TKe Grown Mans Candy Store. j wwhi rului tlufhirik itpiiihwi VOU do HC W,TU "'|^^ >s thoughW( i 7)u Mi/iJ OZi AJI l/u /tuiurcs SIX’CCI OTK of ihi I’iu', k)% rrut;i one of ihi /111 S(|/|(OJS \f(PH |nnw(/ul Dp. - .-W mm ilwn ilk i)2J plus u*H.rfl.m ocl (fumihusitkitt $314.95 talk 10 M 'Z owns a give you /fa s/iiii pi i more err i'M/ii ikimmtiiK tKuci'ictis $379 93 U , UliU< L>S P UCI /iii sti/ii I S !(> lunv siiiHiru, i/imi'li iifu fci|* yillii yillniJ idsV (C MMIH lill //(IK sa i/innu;ii/iu»u i liu/nimi ujhujuh $139,95 ForTKe Put OfHoullut Rrcmisedllbwl Nefler Compromise. After a few days of considering, I trimmed out three other on-going activities. As a part of my job as an educa tor, I regularly present seminars on balancing work and family. Last year, me family’s commit ment to a balanced schedule made an impression on me. The mother in the family explained that they set a standard for the maximum number of activities for their school-aged children. Their fami ly’s rule allowed for no more than one community-based activity and one extra-curricular school-based activity for each child per week. But I encourage you to consider sever al issues. First, research has docu mented that in order for families to succeed and be strong, the mem bers need to spend time together. This is a difficult task if the child ren and adults are scheduled to the hilt racing from one activity to another. Second, a child’s ability to adapt is not as fully developed as an adult’s. Sometimes as adults we schedule our children’s dentist appointments, soccer games, dance lessons, visit to grandma’s, and Sunday School play. The schedule deems doable to us. A child may not have the same per spective. And fitting in and mak ing social adjustments through structured group activities may come at the expense of personal health and growth. Each child (and adult too!) needs some time for free play. This is not a time of play where a lesson is always learned from the experience. Children need oppor tunities, especially on school days to enjoy unstructured time to vent energy and unwind mentally. Expect that.
