Ephrata Fair Marks LOU ANN GOOD Lancaster Fanning Staff EPHRATA (Lancaster Co.) Sure, Pennsylvania’s largest street fair is famous for its parade, its cheese steak sandwiches, and its Ferris wheel. But those who stick to Main Street concessions, carni val rides, and parade gawking are missing the best part of the Ephrata Fair. This year, its 75th anniversary, make sure you walk or take the shuttle bus a few blocks south to Tent City, the place where country Henry B. Hoover Inc. Lebanon, PA Sire Power Tunkhannock, PA PenntMd Corporation Lancaster, PA Adamstown Equipment Adamstown, PA Lancaster Farming, Saturday, September 18, 1993-811 75th Anniversary From September 21 to 25, Tent City carries a full agenda of ag-related activities. Some is serious stuff such as farm equipment displays but other things are just plain ridiculous fun such as the pig chase and the calf dressing contest. For 25 years, Charles Ackley, former advi sor for the Young Adult Farmer Program for Ephrata School District, has been in charge of Tent City activities. During his tenure, Tent City has grown to include farm machinery displays, tractor driving contests, garden trac tor pulls, a community tug-of-war rope pull, a milking contest, family fun night on Friday, and a pumpkin contest. “Large animal shows have diminished but sheep and hog shows have grown in size,” Ackley said. He said that the success of Tent City is due to the involvement of FFA and adult farmers, who lake charge of most of the activities. This year, Ackley has turned the reins of leadership over to Rep. Terry Scheetz and Clark Stauffer. Antique tractor judging on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. is a new activity this year. University of Minnesota - MN Ext. It’s where the bleat ing of sheep mingles with pig squealing and bawling steers. During other times of the year, these sounds are foreign to Ephrata Park, where Tent City is located, but the last full week of every Sep tember, these sounds attract crowds of fairgoers eager to see real farm animals. Tent City isn’t just a place for town folks to gape. It’s really the place where country folks congre gate to show off their tractor driv ing skills, where 4-H’ers and FFA’ers compete in ewe-to-ewe combat, and where hog buyers open their hearts and pocketbooks to claim the highest bid.
