Md. Contest Winners Advance To Nationals

TIMONIUM. Md. Judging
contests have been an essential
part of the 4-H dairy and livestock
programs in Maryland.
Starting at the county level,
practices are held for anyone in
terested. They give placings and
oral reasons to their adult coaches.
From this group, a team of four is
chosen to represent the county at
the state contest held each year at
the Maryland State Fair. They
compete as county teams and on
an individual basis, hoping to be
chosen to go to National competi
The 4-H’ers work hard from 8
a.m. until 2 p.m. judging the class
es of animals. During the contest,
they are not permitted to com
municate with anyone but the su
perintendent. Concentrating on
each class, they put to use the
knowledge their coaches have
taught them during the several
months of practice in their home
Then several hours of waiting
as final results are computed.
Emotions run high, there is clap
ping, cheering and cameras flash
ing as parents beam with pride as
each individual or team is called to
the platform to receive their award
for a job well done.
The 10 individuals scoring
highest in the senior division re
main at the fair for two days of
coaching and practice. From these
10, four individuals are chosen ac
cording to their five highest scores
to represent Maryland at the na
tional contests. Four additional

Myers, Kelly Savage, and Shawn
Johnson will go to Louisville.

overall score for all breeds spon
sored by the Maryland Holstein
Friesian Association and the
Dorothy Emerson Memorial Tro
phy for highest score on oral rea
sons sponsored by the Maryland

score on placings in the senior di
