A46-lancaster Fanning, Saturday, September 4, 1993 4-Hers From Nine Counties Exhibit At KUTZTOWN (Berks Co.) The 48th Annual Southeast Dis trict 4-H Dairy Show was held last week, at the Kutztown Fair grounds. There were 238 animals exhibited by 4-H dairy club mem bers from nine southeastern Pen nsylvania counties including Berks, Bucks, Chester, Delaware, Lehigh. Monroe, Montgomery, Northampton and Schuylkill Counties. Among the animals exhibited were: 109 Holsteins, 24 Ayrshires, 23 Brown Swiss. 18 Guernseys, 57 Jerseys and 7 Milking Shor thorns. John Bomgardner, a Hols tein breeder from Ono, Pennsylva nia, judged the Holstein classes while Thomas Arrowsmith, a breeder of Jersey cattle from Peach Bottom, Pennsylvania, judged the colored breed classes. During the course of the show, exhibitors who did an outstanding job of fitting and showing their animals were given Master Fitter and/or Master Showman Awards. The fitting and showmanship judge for the colored breeds was David Swartz, County Extension Director from Perry County. Pen nsylvania. In the Holstein ring, Lisa Francisco, a Telemark rep resentative and Holstein breeder from Branchville, New Jersey, judged showmanship and Thomas Barley, operating a registered Holstein dairy at Rheems, Pen nsylvania. was the fitting judge. The blue ribbon animals Cram each class became eligible to com pete in the Pennsylvania Junior Dairy Show which will be held Monday. September 20, 1993, at the Farm Show Complex in Har risburg. Benner, Brightbill Take Home Champion Honors NEWPORT (Perry Co.) —Erin Benner and Kevin Brightbill, both of Millers town, walked out of the show ring with the champion rib bons during the market hog and steer show at the Perry County Fair. Benner’s 1,267-pound heavy weight Simmental steer was nam ed grand champion by judge Chet Hughes of Lancaster. Hughes praised the animal for the proper amount of finish and conforma tion. Benner’s steer also was named FFA Champion. Other winners in the steer show included Scott By ers. Liverpool, showing the re serve grand champion and reserve FFA champion steer; Rachael Finkenbinder, Duncannon, show ing the 4-H champion steer, and Sheri Kitner, Shermansdale, showing the reserve champion 4-H steer. Brightbill’s 254-pound heavy weight market hog bested the other 62 hogs in the show to be named Perry County Fair grand champion and FFA champion market hog. In making his choice, swine judge Dave Hartman of Danville, commented on the ani mal’s correctness on the move, flexibility, overall muscling. USDA Announces Disaster Relief NORTH CORNWALL (Lebanon Co.) Fanners may now apply for financial relief from crop losses sustained as a result of hot and dry conditions during the 1993 growing season, according to the USDA Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service.
