Several hundred farmers attended an all-day educational field day at the Lititz headquarters of Binkley and Hurst Bros. Inc., a farm equipment dealer. The event free to the public was jointly sponsored by Binkley and Hurst and Brubaker Agronomic Consulting Service, of Ephrata. Equipment technicians for Binkley and Hurst and representa tives of manufacturers demon strated the use of some forage harvesters, rock pickers and other equipment and implements. Stutzman showed the difference in apparent effectiveness of using different pesticides, and also no pesticides, in controlling root worm damage. Using a soil compaction tester, and having dug a three-foot trench into the field, Stutzman demon strated the effects of compaction and how it varies in a field. The trench revealed the level of the compacted hardpan, which can form a water barrier and restrict root growth, as a result of working the field when it was wet. Representatives of seed compa nies were also on hand to talk about their products.
