Tour Looks At
The Whole Picture
ENGLEWOOD. Colo. Deci
sions made by U.S. sheep produc
ers ultimately affect domestic and
international buyers, said particip
ants of the recent American Sheep
Industry Association Tall Timber
Tour.
End-users such as fashion
designers, industrial manufactur
ers, wool buyers, and legislative
representatives spent two-and-a
half days interacting with produc
ers and addressing issues con
fronting the wool industry. Group
members said they gained a new
perspective of the sheep industry
as they took a look at the whole
picture from start to finish.
“Learning the other person’s
perspective is helpful in building
coalitions within an industry,”
said Joe Helle, Wool Council
chair. “Sheep producers also were
given the opportunity to hear the
concerns of the wool buyer and
end-user. This type of interchange

is beneficial to the industry as a
whole.”
Participants experienced a
sheep-shearing demonstration,
saw shorn wool being classed and
skirted, sheep grazing on public
lands, and enjoyed a delectable
lamb barbecue. Extensive group
discussions were held as particip
ants voiced concerns and debated
crucial issues facing the wool
industry.
Among topics of importance
were the North American Free
Trade Agreement, the General
Agreement on Tariffs and Trade,
polypropylene contamination, and
new industrial uses for' Wool.
“Opinions and perceptions were
as diverse as the group itself,” said
Gene Brune, American Sheep
Industry president. “These ses
sions allowed the group of brain
storm ideas that would enhance
the industry and ultimately their
livelihood.”
