    Holstein Club Starts
Chain Calf Program
READING (Berks Co.) The
Berks County Holstein Club
decided to start a chain calf prog
ram to help provide a foundation
calf to a junior member so that
they could develop a strong cow
family.
With money from its annual
cheese sale, the Berks County
Holstein Club purchased a March
Aerostar heifer from Tim and
Teresa Kissling of Hiddenview
Holsteins. The calf was bred from
a cow family that Teresa Kissling
had previously owned, which car
ried her father’s Mar-Anne prefix.
The dam and granddam of the
calf are both Very Good with
records of 29,000 pounds of milk
and 35,000 pounds of milk
respectively.
The Berks County Holstein
Club held a contest in order to
select the worthy junior to award
the calf to. Erica Davis, daughter
of Luther and Teresa Davis of
Kutztown, won the first chain calf.
She is a member and treasurer of
the Northern Berks 4-H Dairy
Club and also Carries projects of
sewing and animal science in the
Fleetwood 4-H Club.
Erica has been showing for six
years and hopes to be able to show
her chain calf. Her jobs on the
farm include feeding calves, feed
ing heifers and dry cows hay, and
helping her dad milk.
