Dorset Club Honors Merritt
UNIVERSITY PARK (Centre
Co.) The Continental Dorset
Club has honored Thomas L. Mer
ritt, Penn State Professor emeritus
of animal science, with a plaque
for his many years of support of
Polled Dorset sheep. The award
was presented at the national show
and sale banquet held in Staunton,
Va., recently.
Merritt joined the Penn State fa
culty in 1960. He coordinated
Penn State’s horse and sheep pro
grams, developed six new courses,
and taught a total of 10 different
courses during his career. He also
coached livestock, horse, and
wool judging teams that won
many regional and national con
tests, including a horse judging
team that won the world title in
1981.
During his 12-year tenure on
the University Faculty Senate,
Merritt served as a member of the
Faculty Advisory Committee to
then-President Bryce Jordan and
chaired the senate during the
1988-1989 academic year. In
1989, he was selected by the board
of trustees to chair the Presidential
