Poole Wins Grand Champion Holstein At
CONNIE LEINBACH
Berks Co. Correspondent
KUTZTOWN (Berks Co.) It
took 21 years, but David Poole
finally got his grand champion
recently at the Kutztown Fair
Holstein Show.
Poole, Bemville R.D. 2, whose
farm is called Fantasyland Hols
icins, savoied every minute of it as
he watched Nell, a 3-year-old
junior cow, gather several prizes.
Nell also got best udder and was
one of the best three.
Poole was particularly pleased
that his cow won this show,
because it is one of the most
intensely competitive show in the
county. Most of the top Holstein
herds are represented.
Poole’s grand champion has a
tremendous dairy frame, noted
judge John Howard of Lancaster
County. “She’s nearly perfect over
the top line; wide all the way
through from hooks to pins. She
also carries that width through the
rear.
“Her udder attachment is level
on the udder floor and she’s correct
on her hind legs, viewed from the
side and the rear,’’ Howard said.
Besides her strong physical
characteristics, Poole said the
cow’s personality is “awesome.”
“She’s a baby,” he said with a
smile.
Lolly Lesher, fair spokeswo
man, noted that Poole’s herd is
always in the top five at all the
shows in the county.
“He’s modest, but his is just an
excellently managed herd,” Lesher
said.
Stacey Geist of Topton won the
most honors of the night, including
senior champion and grand
champion. Several other of her
cows won top honors.
Howard praised all the cows in
the show, saying the quality was
good.
“There are a lot of really close
placings,” he said.
This year, Lesher noted, the tot
al number of animals, including
sheep, steer and hogs at the fair is
