Adams 4-H’ers
Congratulations goes to the 44 Adams
County 4-H’ers who competed in Penn State
4-H Achievement Days held at Penn State on
July 27-29.
During the three-day program, 4-H mem
bers got to experience college and dorm life
firsthand, while they worked hard to succeed
<tn their designated contest.
The contests started early Wednesday
morning, and some ran until late in the after
noon. On Tuesday, a welcoming program
was held with the assistant dean of agricul
ture at Penn State welcoming 4-H to Penn
State University. Then 4-H “rocked the
house” as “The New York Skating Express”
entertained the delegation with dancing, skat
ing. and comical routines. On Thursday, an
awards ceremony was held to congratulate all
4-H’ers for their outstanding achievements
during the week’s events.
The Adams County Meats Judging Senior
Team, consisting of Dan Ludwig, Beau
Ramsburg, Travis Green, and Kim Funt, took
first place. First place was also awarded to
the Junior Meats Judging Team, which con
sisted of Mark Wessel, Wayne Flickinger,
Megen Wessel, and Eugene Hunt Dan Lud
wig and Mark Wessel were both awarded

high individual while Wayne Flickinger re
ceived second place. Beau Ramsburg and
Megen Wessel both received third place,
while Travis Green and Eugene Hunt were
awarded fourth.
The Senior Aiipistol Team, consisting of
Abe Bucher, Mike Linebaugh, Blake Livels
berger, received second place. Blake Livels
berger placed fifth, while Mike Linebaugh
placed seventh place. Junior Airpistol Team
received fourth place. This team was com
prised of Matt Linebaugh, Brian Kiehl, Chad
Funt and Denise Green. Laura Giardullo, An
gie Giardullo, and Mary Beth Stahl were the
fifth placed team in Foods & Nutrition. Jessi
ca Dayhoff, Andrea Bodenberg, and Beth
Green received sixth place in Clothing &
Textiles. The Horse Bowl Team, comprised
of Debbie Wilkinson, Heather Hawkins, Me
lissa Hawkins, and Teresa Scamack, placed
seventh. Sonja Smith, Kristin Johnston, and
Julie Zepp all represented Adams County in
fashion revue, while Andrew Waybright and
Richie Spangler both participated in the trac
tor driving contest. Richi’e’received seventh
place, and Andy received tenth. Other high
placing individuals were Joy Hess, who plac
ed seventh in dairy judging and Shawna
Ford, who placed ninth in horse judging
junior.
Other Adams County 4-H members parti
cipating in State Days are: Jennifer Fuhrman,
Trisha Erford, and Shannon Brady participat
ed in the horse judging senior contest, while
Shawna Ford and Brandi Cook competed in
the junior horse judging contest. Kelly
Rockafellow represented Adams County in
the public speaking competition, while Bran
dy Carey attended the Horticulture Educa
tional Program. Heidi Dahlhammer and Sa
mantha Lane competed in the hippology con
test, and Curtis Mayer competed in the
archery contest. The dairy judging team con
sisted of Joy HcSs, Melissa Wenger, and
Stanley Reever. Chaperones who graciously
volunteered to attend 4-H State Days were
Larry Feeser, Joan Grim, Doris Wilkinson,
John Hess, Daniel Hoffman, and Mary Hunt.
After a busy week in Slate College, these
4-H’ers came home to prepare for 4-H Fair.
Mercer 4-H
Twenty-five Mercer County 4-H’ers re
cently vied for state honors at the 1993 Penn
State 4-H Achievement Days held at the
Penn State University.
Selected 4-H members from all across
Pennsylvania demonstrated their training by
competing in one of the more than 25 4-H
contests.
Penn State 4-H Achievement Day provides
an opportunity, for 4-H teens who qualify
through county and regional contests to be
come better acquainted with The Penn Slate
University, broaden their interaction with
4-H youth and adults from across the com
monwealth, and motivate the 4-H’ers to ex

Frazier Zahniser and 4-H leader Ron Wright
accompanied the Mercer County delegation.

York 4-H
The following results are from the York
County 4-H Rabbit and Cavy Show held in
conjunction with the 4-H Fair on July 24.
Rabbit & Cavy Show
Nearly 30 4-H members from around the
county brought their best rabbits to cavies to
show. More than 60 rabbits in 10 different
breeds as well as seven cavies in three differ
ent breeds were shown. Also included were a
pet class in both rabbit and cavy.

Meet The Farm Animals
On July 23, York area urban day care cen
ters were invited to bring their children to a
‘Meet the Farm Animals’ petting zoo held at
the 4-H center near Bair, where they were
able to observe and pet all kinds of farm ani
mals including sheep, ducks, kittens, calves,
pigs, goats, rabbits, and a horse.
One of the chickens even laid an egg for
them to see. The York County Seeing Eye
Puppy Club was on hand to let the children
cuddle their adorable puppies.
Nearly 400 children and staff from seven
area centers participated. After their trip
through the petting zoo, children were treated
to a cup of juice and animals crackers donat
ed by Stauffer’s Cookie Outlet of York.
They also were able to observe members
of the 4-H Fiber Club as they demonstrated
the art of carding and spinning wool. Finally,
they looked at completed projects the 4-H
members had exhibited at the fair.
Members were available for answering
any of the many questions the children had
concerning the animals and 4-H. The pro
gram was coordinated to give urban children
the opportunity to become familiar with farm
children, animals, and to help them recognize
where their food comes from. It was deemed
a success by all involved, and will be offered
again next year during the 4-H Fair.
York County 4-H Beef Club
The 4-H Beef Club held its annual show in
conjunction with the 4-H Fair. Larry Weaver
of New Holland, was the judge. Twenty-four
members participated with results as follows:
